I'm still basking in the glow of having made a pretty darn good year end mix. And for the first time in three years, I got all the songs I wanted on one disc....so of course there were some casualties along the way. The following is a list of songs that, for reasons mostly beyond their control, were considered for but ultimately left off of this year's mix:
The Commander Thinks Aloud by The Long Winters Five on the Five by The Raconteurs There's A Reason by A.A. Bondy Modern Guilt by Beck Your Favorite Music by Clem Snide Life in Technicolor by Coldplay Ants Marching by Dave Matthews Band (RIP, Leroi Moore) California Brown and Blue by Denison Witmer Nashville by Giant Bear Keep It Together by Guster (sorry, Jay) Starkville by Indigo Girls Sad Clown or Worn Out Shoes by Joe Purdy Under the Cold Blue Stars by Josh Rouse Don't Talk Back by Kasey Chambers Lucky Me by Lisa LoebOh Mighty Engine by Neil Halstead No Baby I by The Old 97s Smile and Love, Reign O'er Me by Pearl Jam King of the Road by Rufus Wainwright Blue Hotel by Ryan Adams Tiny City of Ashes by Sun Kil Moon Never Stop by Taylor Davis Good Intentions by Toad the Wet Sprocket Luxury Liner by Whiskeytown Ashes of American Flags (live) by Wilco On the Road Again by Willie Nelson
I'm sitting in my hotel room, a few minutes away from walking out the door, and it's one of those days that just seems......hopeful. Like the kind of day where the car in front of me might pay for my venti hazelnut hot chocolate. Or the kind of day where the hot girl down the aisle from me at Barnes and Noble strikes up a conversation because Paste is her favorite magazine, too. It feels like today will be one of those days where people live up to their best possible potential.
Now, having said all that touch-feely crap, I will probably get pooped on by birds when I walk outside, get a flat tire, and spill that hazelnut hot chocolate deliciousness all over my favorite work pants.
But that's okay, because life is all about perspective.
Nights like this are half the reason I keep a blog. Because, let's face it, I wouldn't call or email all my friends individually to tell them that I heard LFO's Summer Girls on the radio. But thanks to the magic of the interwebs, I can skip the ten minute tangent about the spectacular cheesiness of the pop song that is Summer Girls.
And instead I can just post the lyrics and the video...my own thoughts couldn't possibly do it justice.
Once you read / watch the whole thing, feel free to share with the rest of the readership your favorite line from the song. For me personally, it's When you take a sip you buzz like a hornet / Billy Shakespeare wrote a whole bunch of sonnets
Any who, thank you late 90's and the glut of boy bands you flooded the music market with. And dear readership, you are more than welcome (in advance) for getting this song stuck in your head all day.
Enjoy!
(spoken intro) Yeah, I like it when the girls stop by in the summer Do you remember? Do you remember? When we met? Last summer...
(chorus) New Kids on the Block had a bunch of hits Chinese food makes me sick And I think it's fly when the girls stop by for the summer, for the summer I like girls that wear Abercrombie and Fitch I'd take her if I got one wish But she's been gone since that summer, since that summer
Hip hop marmalade, spic and span Met you one summer and it all began You're the best girl that I ever did see The great Larry Bird jersey, thirty-three When you take a sip you buzz like a hornet Billy Shakespeare wrote a whole bunch of sonnets Call me Willy Whistle 'cause I can't speak baby Something in your eyes went and drove me crazy Now I can't forget you and it makes me mad Left one day and never came back Stayed all summer then went back home Macauley Culkin was at Home Alone Fell deep in love, but now we ain't speakin' Michael J. Fox was Alex P. Keaton When I met you, I said my name was Rich You look like a girl from Abercrombie and Fitch
(chorus)
Cherry Pez, Cold Crush, rock star boogie Used to hate school so I had to play hookie Always been hip to the b-boy style Known to act wild and make the girls smile Love New Edition and the Candy Girl Reminds me of you 'cause you rocked my world You come from Georgia where the peaches grow They drink lemonade and speak real slow You love hip hop and rock 'n roll Dad took off when you were four years old There was a good man named Paul Revere I feel much better, baby, when you're near You love Fun Dip and Cherry Coke I like the way you laugh when I tell a joke When I met you I said my name was Rich You look like a girl from Abercrombie and Fitch
'Cause summer girls come and summer girls go Some are worthwhile and some are so-so 'Cause summer girls come and summer girls go
Some are worthwhile and some are so-so
On certain Sundays in November when the weather bothers me I empty drawers of other summers where my shadows used to be...
It's been a gray kind of day week. But that's okay, because I had today off. Things I accomplished today after skipping out on watching football with friends: Watch Godfather II on AMC. Watch Godfather I on AMC. Start laundry. Go to Target (don't get too jealous, Jeff). Finish laundry.
And when I got back to the Residence Inn, the lobby greeted me with a little Hard Candy. Can't beat that, especially on a Sunday in November. So now I'm spinning the whole album and getting back on track with this daily blogging thing.
What else is new, you ask? Well, let's see. I have friends who won't talk to me. If you ever want to lose friends (and alienate people) all you need to do is get a job where all you do is travel and work, work and travel. 24/7. Then you can't talk when they want to talk, and you in turn get mad when you can talk and they don't have time for you. So that's pretty awesome.
I did polish off my year end mixed cd. Usually that's an arduous process that, once completed, merits its own post. Then I never get around to mailing it to half the people that have asked for a copy. As usual, upon further review I realize that I suck as a person a lot more than I originally thought. At any rate, I just published it as an iMix over at iTunes so Motel Songs: The 2008 Mix should be available there soon enough.
I could go on, but I bummed Iron Man from a friend and I've been meaning to watch it for three days now.
This one might have it all. Elizabeth Shue. Mr. Miyagi. Feathered hair for everyone (except Mr. Miyagi of course). Ralph Macchio weighing 97 pounds soaking wet. The goons from Cobra Kai. And some Joe Esposito to get us all a little pumped. Now if you'll excuse me, I've got some crane kicks to practice here in my hotel room.
Clouds on the moon it was a Hollywood sky I sat on the wall til your parents drove by and I walked to your door I remember how you smiled Well that was a long time ago
Your fault or mine it's such a tough one to call Do you one day look up to see your innocence fall, From a twelve story window, to the concrete below, it was all such a long time ago
Now your path and mine they never seem to converge And now sat here in God-knows-where with a mouthful of words Well they just sound like noises if you say them enough, It was all such a long time ago
Now was it though?
In some underground saloon, where you can always get a drink There's a girl by the cigarette machine, And I think I'll strike up a conversation, But I wouldn't know how, Doesn't seem such a good idea now...
With the clouds on the moon, another Hollywood sky It's time I dragged myself home and to wonder just why I still think of you now, only as you were then
Have I mentioned yet how the hazelnut hot chocolate at Starbucks has a crack-like addictive hold on me? It's the best thing since sliced internet, I kid you not. Plus the red cups are back. (And now you're making plans to hit Starbucks in the next twelve hours, aren't you? Yeah, I'll see you there. Venti hazelnut hot chocolate is on you, though.)
Alright kids, it's now six minutes til midnight, and I've got an early start tomorrow. Road trip to Mississippi tomorrow.
